In April, 2009, the Commission learned that it was a recipient of a grant from the USEPA through the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation that will support the Commission's work to accelerate adoption of stormwater management Best Management Practices (BMPs) in the Rivanna watershed.
This grant project, now underway, includes cost-sharing for Stormwater BMPs in each of the watershed localities and a program to monitor the effectiveness of these stormwater management practices in reducing flow and pollutant loads. In addition, the project includes studies in Greene and Fluvanna counties to identify opportunities for retrofitting existing sites with enhanced stormwater management.
In year two of the project, the Commission will focus its work with localities and area developers, builders, and engineering and architectural firms to identify barriers that may exist to more widespread implementation of advanced stormwater management (beyond the regulatory requirements) and to identify incentives that may encourage these techniques.
